Origins of green turtle fishery bycatch in the central pacific revealed by mixed genetic markers

چکیده
Longline fishing vessels, such as those that target tuna or billfish, also unintentionally catch endangered marine turtle species on the high seas. The stock composition of this bycatch is often unknown but potentially complex, with individuals coming from many possible origins an ocean-basin scale. To better understand green ( Chelonia mydas ) we obtained 46 turtles, 27-91 cm in curved carapace length, caught by Hawaii- and American Samoa-based pelagic longline vessels across large areas North- South-central Pacific. We genotyped these at nine microsatellite loci one mitochondrial DNA marker, used a baseline 1,043 nesting female turtles beaches Pacific for population assignment mixed-stock analysis. By analyzing both marker types jointly were able to increase power genetically resolve ten stocks females mean self-assignment simulated accuracies 75-97%. Above Equator, was composed mostly Hawaiian Eastern stocks, small number Western Below most common Australia Coral Sea, Samoa French Polynesia, Galápagos Islands. Overall, originating East, West, Central breeding populations major components bycatch, suggesting geographic ranges overlap tracts ocean during life history stages.

Genetic diversity of Iranian melon cultigens revealed by AFLP markers
Iran is a part of the secondary centre of origin of melons, and therefore, there is a wealth of genetic variation of these species in this country. The Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) marker was applied to investigate the genetic variations among five major Iranian melon cultigens (Cucumis melo) and ‘Ananasi’ as a general well-known cultivar. Ten primer pairs were used on 90 indiv...
متن کاملMolecular resolution of marine turtle stock composition in fishery bycatch: a case study in the Mediterranean.
Based on an extensive sampling regime from both nesting populations and bycatch, frequency analyses of mitochondrial (mt) DNA control region haplotypes in the Mediterranean were used to assess the genetic structure and stock composition of the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, in different marine fisheries. The analyses show the following. (i) In drifting longline fisheries working in Med...
متن کاملGenetic analysis of pike-perch, Sander lucioperca L., populations revealed by microsatellite DNA markers in Iran
This study was conducted in order to investigate genetic diversity and population structure of pike-perch in the Northern part of Iran. For this purpose, 207 adult pike-perches from four regions of the Caspian Sea watershed (Talesh Coasts, Anzali Wetland, Chaboksar Coasts and Aras Dam) were collected. DNA was extracted and by using 15 pairs of microsatellite primers, Polymerase Chain Reaction (...
متن کاملTrade-offs in the design of fishery closures: management of silky shark bycatch in the eastern Pacific Ocean tuna fishery.
Bycatch--the incidental catch of nontarget species--is a principal concern in marine conservation and fisheries management. In the eastern Pacific Ocean tuna fishery, a large fraction of nonmammal bycatch is captured by purse-seine gear when nets are deployed around floating objects. We examined the spatial distribution of a dominant species in this fishery's bycatch, the apex predator silky sh...
